These answers explain the main accreditation services and responsibilities in clear terms. For a decision about a specific scope, always contact IACAAB and review the applicable criteria.
What is accreditation?
Accreditation is an independent assessment of an organization’s competence, impartiality and consistent operation for a defined scope of conformity assessment activities.
Who can apply?
Testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, inspection bodies, medical laboratories, product certification bodies and other eligible conformity assessment organizations may apply for the relevant IACAAB program.
What should we do before applying?
Define the requested scope, identify the applicable standard, review the criteria, establish the management system and retain evidence of technical competence. Contact IACAAB early so the scope and application documents can be confirmed.
How long does accreditation take?
Timing depends on the scope, completeness of the application, readiness of the organization, assessment findings and the speed of corrective action. IACAAB can provide a more useful estimate after reviewing the proposed scope and application.
What happens during an assessment?
Assessors review documented arrangements, observe technical activities where applicable, interview personnel and examine records. Findings are reported clearly and the organization is given an opportunity to respond with corrective action.
Can an accredited organization change its scope?
Yes. An accredited organization may request an extension or other change to its scope. The request is reviewed and assessed against the applicable requirements before the scope is changed.
How can I verify an accreditation claim?
Check the organization’s current certificate, accreditation number, scope, location and validity. The claim must relate only to activities covered by the current accredited scope. Contact IACAAB if information is missing or inconsistent.
How are complaints and appeals handled?
Complaints and appeals should be submitted with the relevant facts and supporting records. IACAAB reviews them through an impartial process and communicates the outcome in accordance with its procedures.
